About the role

JOB DESCRIPTION Claims Manager - Management Liability Counterpart is an insurtech platform reimagining management and professional liability for the modern workplace. We believe that when businesses lead with clarity and confidence, they become more resilient, more innovative, and better prepared for what’s ahead. That’s why we built the first Agentic Insurance™ system — where advanced AI and deep insurance expertise come together to proactively assess, mitigate, and manage risk. Backed by A-rated carriers and trusted by brokers nationwide, our platform helps small businesses grow with confidence. Join us in shaping a smarter future, helping businesses Do More With Less Risk®. As a Claims Manager, you will manage a large and diverse caseload of professional and management liability claims. You will be measured by a completely different standard of what a claims function can and should be, not the capped caseloads and cost-containment mindset of legacy carriers. You will keep raising the number of claims you can handle well by adopting the tools and agents that make you more efficient, and you will be a key feedback provider for the systems that let us deliver world-class service while managing legal costs tightly, making data-driven decisions on claim value, and ensuring other responsible parties pay their fair share. YOU WILL Manage a large and diverse caseload of professional and management liability claims, applying sound judgment and legal knowledge to produce efficient and fair outcomes. Continuously increase the size of the caseload you can manage, to a level a conventional adjuster could not sustain, by adopting the tools and agents that raise both your efficiency and your service levels. Constantly improve your close ratio by managing claims proactively and driving each file toward the most timely and cost-effective resolution, not the slow default the industry accepts. Complete accurate and timely investigations into the coverage, liability, and damages for each claim assigned to you. Engage our carrier partners to secure approval of your coverage determinations thoughtfully and efficiently, keeping our promise to insureds and driving to the best outcome as quickly as possible. Improve the accuracy of your reserving by combining better tools and data with your growing experience. Deepen your expertise across multiple specialty liability products and take on progressively more complex litigation. Direct and monitor assignments to experts and outside counsel, holding those vendors accountable to our service standards while managing legal spend tightly. Build and maintain positive, productive relationships with internal and external customers, including policyholders, brokers, carrier partners, and Risk Engineers (underwriters). Support our data collection efforts and models by using the Counterpart claim system to fully and accurately capture critical details about each claim. Adopt new technology and systems quickly, and give the product team specific, user-level feedback on how to make them better. Identify and escalate insights into emerging claims trends across industries, geographies, and key business segments. Ensure that every touchpoint with our insureds and brokers is representative of our brand, mission, and vision. YOU HAVE At least 10 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years of experience litigating or managing directors’ and officers’, employment practices liability, or fiduciary liability claims. Previous carrier experience is a plus. Bachelor’s degree required; law degree (J.D.) and professional designations (RPLU, AIC, etc.) highly preferred. Must possess all required state claim adjuster licenses, or be able to obtain them within 90 days of hire. Proven ability to work both independently on complex matters and collaboratively as a team player to assist others as needed. High level of personal initiative and leadership skills. Exceptional time management, problem solving and organizational skills. Comfort and skill operating in a paperless claims environment and using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.). Additional familiarity with Google Docs Editors suite is a plus. Willingness to use creative thinking and data-driven insights to overcome obstacles to resolution. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to succeed in a full remote workplace environment, and travel as necessary (approximately 10-15%). PEOPLE WHO THRIVE HERE: Entrepreneurial, willing to experiment, embrace new technology, try new things Comfortable with ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities. Change is normal and happens quickly at startups. You have experience experimenting, learning, and pivoting with your learnings. Take ownership of your projects, your deadlines, your functions, your calendar, your own destiny. People who thrive at a startup like ours have a bias toward action and documentation. Communicate directly and with clarity. Working cross-functionally is an essential part of any role at Counterpart. You’ll succeed by conjoining expectations with others and holding all accountable. THE HARD PARTS: We're early, and that's not always comfortable. Counterpart is still a young company, which means some processes, tools, and norms are still being built in real time. You may encounter situations where the answer doesn't exist yet — and you'll be expected to help create it rather than wait for someone else to. The feedback culture is real. We mean it when we say speak boldly and honestly. That goes both ways — you'll be expected to give direct feedback and to receive it without defensiveness. If you've spent your career in environments where difficult conversations get softened or avoided, that adjustment can take time. Distributed work requires more intentionality. There's no office to drop by, no hallway conversation to clear up a misunderstanding. Staying connected, communicating proactively, and building relationships across a remote team takes real effort; it doesn't happen automatically here. We move fast and expect you to keep up. Counterpart operates with a bias toward action. Decisions get made quickly, priorities can shift, and we don't wait for perfect information. If you're used to slower, more deliberate organizational rhythms, the pace here can be a genuine adjustment. You're expected to own your outcomes. There's a high degree of autonomy here, which is a feature, but it also means there's no one looking over your shoulder to catch things before they become problems. The people who thrive take that ownership seriously and hold themselves accountable without being asked.
